About Friedrichshafen, Germany

Whether or not there is an aviation conference going on, aircraft enthusiasts from around the world flock to the industrial city of Friedrichshafen, which is located on the northern shore of Lake Constance in southern Germany. Switzerland is on the south shore and Austria borders the eastern edge. But visitors come for more than a beautiful view of the Alps. They come because it is the birthplace of the zeppelin.

Inventor Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin was born on an island in Lake Constance in 1938. After serving in the German army, he used his interest in lighter-than-air flight to develop the zeppelin, a rigid airship, for military purposes. He later went on to develop the airship for commercial purposes.

Things to do in Friedrichshafen

  • Know the difference between a zeppelin, an airship and a dirigible? Well, you can find out at the Zeppelin Museum where full-size replicas of the Hindenburg and other zeppelins are on display. Take a guided tour of the museum or just wander around on your own with a hand-held audio guide.
  • Take a ride in a zeppelin. If you’ve always wanted to ride in an airship, several companies operate flights around the Lake Constance-Alps area. They are a bit pricey but if you consider the flight a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, you might want to go. Flights ranging from a half hour (about $200) to two hours (about $800) take you about 1,000 feet in the air where, from the gondola with viewing windows, you and about a dozen other sightseers will move – smoothly, most of the time -- about 40 mph over the picturesque area.
  • Go bicycling. There are cycling paths all around Lake Constance.
  • Drink beer. Just a short distance from Friedrichshafen, the Tettnang region is famous for its hops, so revered among brewers they are often called green gold. Experience the history of hops at the Tettnanger Hopfenmuseum where a collection of old machinery and tools show how ingenious early brewers were. You can also learn all the secrets of brewing beer -- from the ingredients that go into it to the brewing process itself.
  • Eat up. Ethnic Germans are known for their delicious and rich foods. There are noodles and dumplings, potato pancakes and hot potato salad, pretzels and bread pudding. But, perhaps the most gotta-have-it culinary delight in Friedrichshafen is a freshly caught Bodenseefelchen, a whitefish from Lake Constance with firm flesh that is delicious pan-fried, steamed or smoked. Or, try a Swabian Cream Cake, a flatbread spread with sour cream and topped with onions and bacon. For desert, ofenschlupfer, a rich bread casserole with apples, raisins and almonds.
