Why hire a private jet to FLL?
There is the sun. And the beach. And the palm trees, of course. But there is so much more.
The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show
Every fall, the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, kicks off the Florida Boat Show Season. More than 10 internationally famous boat shows are held on both coasts of Florida between November and April.
Many of the 110,000 visitors to the boat show rent a private jet into Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, which is located four miles from the Bahia Mar Beach Hotel, the main staging ground for the event.
It’s appropriate that the world’s largest in-water boat show is held in the aptly named Yachting Capital of the World; the greater Fort Lauderdale area has 50,000 registered yachts and more than 300 miles of waterways.
In 2018, 1,200 exhibitors from 52 countries displayed more than 1,500 boats worth billions of dollars. The boat show is held on seven waterfront locations with visitors ferried from site to site by water taxi.
There is plenty of parking for private jets at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International during the event.
Want a boat but not a yacht? There are plenty of those on display, too. You can charter a private jet into FLL to get a new catamaran or water ski boat. There are trawlers and fishing boats, cabin cruisers and sailboats. Everything from high performance boats to inflatables are on display at the show. And, of course, all the accessories and support services a boat – or yacht – owner needs.
You won’t get thirsty, especially if you are a beer-drinker. There are so many craft beers and beer vendors at the show that it has been said that boat show beer sales rival those at the Super Bowl.
By the way, visitors also rent private jets into FLL for the Miami International Boat Show, held in February, and the Palm Beach Boat Show, which is held in March.
The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is about 10 minutes from Port Everglades, one of the busiest cruise ship ports in the world. Visitors charter private jets into Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International year-round to get to their cruise vacation. In 2017, some four million people climbed aboard the 40 cruise ships on 11 cruise lines that sailed from Port Everglades.
Florida’s “powerhouse port” is one of the top three cruise ports in the world.
A private jet owner commented that the price of leaving his plane with fixed base operators at FLL during both a 7-day and 10-day cruise “didn’t break the bank.”
It’s also possible to charter a private jet into FLL to go on a cruise out of the Port of Miami. The “Cruise Capital of the World” is 26 miles south of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International.
Port Everglades isn’t just a place where cruise ships dock. It’s also one of the business container centers in the United States. That makes Fort Lauderdale the home of many major distribution centers.
Business elite rent private jets into FLL for the arriving containers and all the ancillary businesses that go along with them.
Port Everglades is the main seaport in South Florida for petroleum products, including gasoline and jet fuel.
Watch the Panthers
The BB&T Center, which is home to the National Hockey League's Florida Panthers is located in Sunrise, about 18 miles northwest of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Fans of the team can charter a private jet into FLL to catch any of the team’s home games.
History of KFLL
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) opened in 1929 as Merle Fogg Airport, named after a World War I aviator, on an abandoned 9-hole golf course that was destroyed by a hurricane in 1926.
It went through several name changes through the years. It was commissioned by the United States Navy during World War II and renamed Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale. The naval air station was used to turn civil planes into military ones and ship them across the Atlantic to Europe and North Africa.
For trivia buffs, Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale played a part in creating the Bermuda Triangle mystery. It was the home base for Flight 19, the collective name of the five TBM Avengers Avenger torpedo bombers carrying 13 Navy men and Marines that took off from Fort Lauderdale in 1945, never to be seen again.
After signaling they were lost, the planes disappeared. While most believe the planes ran out of gas and crashed into the sea, the spooky disappearance of those planes on Dec. 5, 1945 spurred all sorts of theories.
It was in the 1960s when that part of the Atlantic, a place where too many planes just mysteriously vanished, would start to be called the Bermuda Triangle. Writers and conspiracy theorists had all sorts of explanations, from it being a vortex of an alternative universe to it being a place of alien abductions.
After the war, in 1946, the Naval Air Station was transferred to the county and renamed Broward County International Airport.
It’s unclear exactly when it was renamed Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport but it was sometime after commercial passenger service began in 1953.
The airport, one of the fastest growing in Florida, has been growing in passenger traffic for more than 50 years. In 1966, the airport averaged 48 airline operations a day. In 2017, it had 312,763.
